This section of US Hwy 50 (US 50) has a high number of crossover accidents, and CDOT decided to add a median barrier to prevent future crossover accidents. The Basis team provided a preconstruction design of safety improvements, which included a widened median with a new median barrier, widened outside shoulders, centerline realignment, and superelevation corrections.
Several alternatives were identified and helped determine the limits of the project that could be completed within available funding. The alternative analysis included identifying and correcting substandard existing conditions such as superelevation and sight distance, determining options for widening the existing highway to provide a median barrier to prevent crossover accidents, analyzing existing structures and drainage and utility features, and investigating existing rock cuts.
