Broadmoor Bluffs Bridge Hydraulics Assessment

Client: City of Colorado Springs

Basis was selected by the City to performed hydrologic and hydraulic assessments, design plans, specifications, and estimates for the rehabilitation, or reconstruction of seven City minor bridges in the Broadmoor Bluffs area ranging from 48”CMP to 144” CMP.

Due to age and condition of the bridges, the team was tasked with determining the current day flowrates, bridge hydraulic capacity, scour potential, and possibility of overtopping or failure. The team also performed on-site inspections of each bridge system, including the end treatments, walls, channel integrity, and evidence of scour or flooding.

The proximity to Cheyenne Mountain created large basins with high velocities of channelized flow in the creeks or ephemeral tributaries with homes in close proximity. Basis engineers used four methods in determining the hydrology and calculated flows for these basins which ranged from 20 acres to 900 acres. Our team establish water surface elevations at each location, allowing the team to identify areas of concern and remediation to provide protection of adjacent homeowners and the bridge infrastructure.
