Powers Boulevard (CO 21) and Research Parkway Interchange

Client: CDOT Region 2

This CDOT Region 2 project constructed a new diverging diamond interchange at the intersection of Powers Boulevard (CO 21) and Research Parkway within the City of Colorado Springs at a total construction cost of $26.8M. Basis provided Construction Inspection and Schedule Review services as a subconsultant on the construction administration team selected by CDOT through a competitive procurement process.

A new 127’ single-span bridge was constructed over Research Pkwy using prestressed concrete bulb tee girders (16 girder lines), precast deck panels, and driven steel pile deep foundations. The bridge approaches were constructed with 215k cubic yards of embankment that was excavated from neighboring Fairfax Pond that functions as the permanent water quality feature for the newly constructed interchange.

Five new mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls were constructed totaling just over 13k square feet of precast panel facing keeping the project within existing right-of-way. The existing mainline Powers Blvd bridge over Cottonwood Creek was retrofit to convert the existing raised median to new travel lanes. The final pavement surface was finished with a new lift of stone-matrix asphalt from the Woodmen Road ramps all the way up to the Briargate Pkwy ramps.
